ABOUT

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • How do I pay?
The fee for treatment is $225 per 50 min session. Payment can be made at the end of your session. Advance payment is also available for virtual and telephone therapy sessions. We accept all major credit and debit cards, e-transfer, direct bank transfer, cash, and cheques.
  • Are virtual sessions available?
Yes! Dr. Upshaw is able to accommodate in-person and virtual (Zoom) therapy sessions at this time. Telephone sessions may also be conducted when virtual or in-person appointments are not possible.
  • How much does therapy cost?
Dr. Upshaw follows the fee schedule recommended by the Psychological Association of British Columbia (BCPA), which is $225 per 50-minute session. It is the client’s responsibility to consult with their insurance provider regarding the nature and limits of any extended medical benefits. Please note that insurance companies are not billed directly at this time.
  • What is the cancellation / no-show policy?
We request 24 hours’ notice for cancellations. Cancellations made prior to this window will be rescheduled with no penalty. No-shows or cancellations made without 24 hours’ notice incur a fee equivalent to half a session (i.e., $110).
  • Is Dr. Upshaw accepting new therapy clients?
Dr. Upshaw's practice is currently full with a waitlist of approximately 3 months. Please feel encouraged to reach out to be added to the waitlist for services. You will be contacted as soon as an appointment becomes available for you!
  • Do you take insurance?
It is important to note that fees for private psychological services are not covered by our provincial health plan (MSP). Direct billing is not available at this time. For each session, formal receipts are provided for you to submit to obtain coverage from an insurance/extended health benefits plan. Before your first appointment, it may be beneficial to consult with your provider to determine your level of coverage.
  • Do I need a referral?
A referral from your family physician is NOT required to see a clinical psychologist. However, if you have extended mental health benefits, your insurance company may require a referral in order to cover your therapy visits. Please consult with your insurer prior to your first appointment to confirm the extent of your coverage and whether a doctor's referral is required to initiate coverage.
  • How long is each session?
While each appointment is scheduled for 1 hour, this includes 50 minutes of face-to-face time and 10 minutes for documentation of your session and treatment planning for future sessions. This 50 minute therapy hour is standard for most psychologists in private practice. Don't worry about watching the clock - Dr. Upshaw will keep things on track to help you get the most out of each session!
  • What can I expect for my first session?
Your first therapy session is an opportunity for Dr. Upshaw to gather information about your current issues or concerns, how long you have been experiencing these challenges, and your background, including any relevant medical or mental health history. You may be asked about your particular goals for treatment, your strengths, and any coping strategies you have used so far. By the end of the second session, you will have worked with Dr. Upshaw to collaboratively develop a tentative treatment plan, including the therapeutic approach that is recommended and the approximate number of sessions that may be required. You should also have sense of whether there is a good fit between you and Dr. Upshaw!
  • What kinds of mental health challenges does Dr. Upshaw work with?
Dr. Upshaw has experience and expertise working with anxiety disorders, depression/mood disorders, stress management, post concussion syndrome, TBI and stroke, adjustment difficulties, chronic pain, sleep problems, loss and grief, and self-esteem issues. If your particular challenges are outside of the scope of Dr. Upshaw's practice, referrals can be made to other mental health professionals in the community.
